A sold out CREW event took place on March 6th
, at the historic Terminal Tower in downtown Cleveland. The event began with a tour of the Tudor-style Greenbrier Suite located on the 12th
floor of the building. This floor was called home by brothers Oris and Mantis Van Sweringen, railroad kings who developed Terminal Tower in the 1920s. Following the tour of the space, attendees gathered in the beautiful library of the suite to listen to Mr. Tom Yablonsky with Downtown Cleveland Alliance give an informative and fascinating presentation on the history of Cleveland’s most iconic property and how the redevelopment of Terminal Tower plays a key part in the continued transformation of the City, especially around Public Square.
The event then shifted to Ulmer & Berne LLP’s spacious conference room where people were greeted with a tasty lunch and refreshments. Focus was then placed on the front of the room where Ms. Karen Paganini, President of K&D Group, along with Ms. Mary Lovett, Partner with Ulmer & Berne, LLP provided an insightful and inspiring discussion on how Karen got started in real estate and the K&D’s plans for renovating Terminal Tower. Karen stated that she initially got in real estate after enrolling in a real estate class that she had seen advertised on TV. Since that time she hasn’t looked back and credits her success to hard work, and told the audience that there isn’t a job on her staff that Karen hasn’t done herself at one point in her career.
Karen indicated that she is the “K” and her ex-husband, with whom she has a wonderful relationship with is the “D” in K&D Group. Karen indicated that she purchases properties primarily on how they feel to her but admitted that financial incentives like historical tax credits play an important part in most of their deals. Karen also discussed work/life balance and that for her “being focused is key”, when she is at work… it is all about work, when she is at home… it is all about family. Karen said it is important to keep your personal and professional lives separate. The discussion was then opened to Q/A where Karen was asked where she gets her design ideas from for the buildings. Karen smiled sweetly and replied “overstock.com
and Target”, the group chuckled and Karen went on to indicate that each building is unique in its own way and she designs each building to be eye appealing, distinct, yet keeping the irreplaceable historic charm that K&D properties possess. Based on the plans that were conveyed to the audience, the Terminal Tower renovation project will be no different, and it will be exciting to see the transformation of this signature landmark over the next year.
